What is BPA?
Bisphenol A (BPA) is used as a plasticizer in plastics. The substance is present in many everyday items such as tableware, drinking bottles, food containers and the like. Through contact with food, BPA can dissolve and enter the human body.
What is dangerous about BPA?
There are many scientific studies on the modes of action and effects of BPA. It can disrupt hormonal balance to the point of affecting fertility. In addition, BPA contributes to the development of cardiovascular disease, liver disease and diabetes.
Why is BPA not banned?
The sale of pacifiers and baby bottles containing BPA was banned by the EU back in 2011. For food containers, provisional tolerable daily intakes of 4 micrograms/KG body weight/day have been in place since 2015. However, according to the latest scientific studies, the European Food Safety Authority (efsa) did not recommend lowering the TDI to 0.2 nanograms until April 2023. This is 20,000 x lower than the provisional value from 2015 . A decision by the EU Commission on the further handling of BPA is now pending.
How can you avoid BPA?
Make sure that drinking bottles and other containers are made without bisphenol A (BPA). Do not use containers with BPA for food storage. Stainless steel or glass containers are free of BPA anyway.
