Overshoes in cycling - what makes them special?
As the name suggests, overshoes are simply put on over the shoe and fastened with the help of a Velcro or zipper. Thanks to the small pack size and light weight, you can even carry them in your jacket pocket and are thus perfectly prepared for changing conditions.
Cycling overshoes are designed specifically for cycling-specific footwear and offer very hard and abrasion-resistant soles with cutouts for cleats, so that you are compatible with click pedals or click system.
Silicone prints, especially in the area of the shaft, prevent the overshoe from slipping during high activity and thus disturbing.
In addition, cycling overshoes are differentiated according to functionality and area of use or cycling discipline:
Wet feet? Not with water-repellent cycling overshoes.
No one should be surprised that cycling is, after all, a sport: accordingly, shoes must always offer good ventilation so that the feet do not heat up too much or swim in sweat. Many cycling shoes therefore have mesh inserts or microperforations to achieve the maximum cooling effect.
This is absolutely indispensable. However, these openings offer not only the air, but also (rain) water the opportunity to penetrate to the feet. The solution: a water-repellent bicycle overshoe or rain overshoe.
A rain overshoe consists of a water- and wind-repellent material mix. Seams, zippers or Velcro closures are sealed water repellent. Above this, you can often find a water-repellent PU coating that provides additional protection against moisture.
Cold feet in winter? Thermal overshoes to the rescue!
With the right winter cycling clothing, cycling is fun even in the cold! Of course, this applies from head to toe: this is where thermal overshoes come into play.
Thermo overshoes usually consist of a wind- and water-repellent outer layer, not unlike the rain overshoe. Materials used here range from softshell to neoprene to Gore Tex.
Underneath this outer layer, however, warming inserts or a warming inner layer, for example made of fine fleece, are added. Even thermal insulating materials can be used, for the extreme temperatures.
So that you can estimate how strong the warming effect of thermal overshoes is or for which temperatures they are suitable, you will find our ice crystals with each article:
- 1 ice crystal - Ideal for the transitional period.
- 2 Ice Crystals - Perfect for single digit temperatures or for very sweaty, intense rides in cold conditions. (medium cold protection)
- 3 Ice Crystals - Designed for temperatures around freezing. (high cold protection)
- 3+ Ice Crystals - Maximum cold protection for freezing cold days. Absolute wind protection with extra warm insulation. (very high cold protection)
Overshoes? But what about aerodynamics?
Aerodynamics is definitely important. Especially if you own very functional road cycling shoes and already enjoy the high performance, of course you don't want to miss them.
However, bike overshoes can be very well optimized for aerodynamics and, depending on the shoe sitting underneath, even increase their wind cut and performance.
To do this, the overshoe is made as tight and elastic as possible and therefore hugs the cycling shoe without getting caught in the wind or even flapping. This is especially true for the upper, which usually contains silicone prints for slip resistance and can even extend beyond the shoe.
As a result, your performance will additionally benefit from the slight compression that is applied to your calves: This promotes blood flow and increases aerodynamics.
Overshoes and visibility in traffic
In traffic, in cloudy weather, in the dark: it is always important to be highly visible as a cyclist. All your equipment can and should literally shine in the dark.
Ideally, all your gear has elements to increase your visibility. Bicycle overshoes can also increase visibility! On the one hand, look for reflective design elements, often as a brand logo or attached to the zipper.
On the other hand, a warning color such as neon yellow can also increase their visibility.
So do you need different kinds of overshoes?
That's up to you to decide. You are certainly most flexible if you have suitable equipment for every situation.
Reflective design elements, for example, are of course particularly effective at night, but have no disadvantage during the day. So if you prefer a combination with all the advantages of a cycling overshoe, we recommend our thermal overshoes from the Bobteam Performance Line. High functionality at an entry-level price.
A bike toe cover or toe warmer is a special variant of the bike overshoe. As can be derived from the name, a toe warmer does not cover the entire shoe, but only the front area of the foot or bike shoe.
The driver thus continues to have easy access to the lacing system of the shoe, for example, the BOA closure system, to make fine adjustments while riding. At the same time, shoes and especially feet are additionally protected from the mostly frontal impacting dirt or mud.
Especially for the transitional period, a toe warmer is a good solution, which is a pleasant addition for autumnal or spring temperatures.
