In the transitional seasons this makes more sense than it first seems: the torso cools fastest in the headwind, while the arms are kept warm by pedalling. A gilet therefore covers exactly the area that loses heat, without trapping heat like a jacket.
Many models fold up small and can be carried in a jersey pocket.
Tip: Pay attention to the back panel. Gilets with a mesh back ventilate better, models with a closed back also protect against spray from behind. Both make sense, but for different weather.
