Sleeveless jerseys are cut like a cycling jersey, just without sleeves, and therefore fit closer than a cycling top.
A jersey for hot days
A sleeveless jersey usually has a front zip and back pockets like a short sleeve jersey. It is suited to hot days on the road bike or to training on the turbo trainer, where hardly any air cools your body. If aerodynamics matter to you, the close-fitting cut is faster than a flapping top.
Your arms and shoulders have no protection from the sun, so on long rides sunscreen is a must there. If it is cool in the morning, you can wear arm warmers with it and slip them off on the way.

Tip: Do not wear a base layer with sleeves under a sleeveless jersey. If you want a layer underneath, go for a sleeveless base layer.
