La Maglia Nera

The black jersey of the Giro d'Italia went to the last rider in the overall classification. It was awarded between 1946 and 1951, then the organiser abolished it.

Why it was abolished

Because riders began to fight for last place. The attention for the last rider was big enough to make it financially worthwhile.

Today

The black jersey lives on as a collector's item and tribute. Whoever wears it shows knowledge of cycling history, not the result of their last ride.
