What rain overshoes do
They keep water and headwind away from the shoe. Cycling shoes are ventilated; this is desirable in summer and the problem from October: cold, wet air gets in through every opening. An overshoe closes these openings.
The models differ in thickness. Thicker versions with neoprene or fleece keep you extra warm and are designed for winter.
When you put them on, the zip is at the back. Cut-outs on the sole leave the cleat and heel cap free. Before you buy, compare your shoe size with the size information; the ranges differ depending on the manufacturer.
