Thermal overshoes are the thickest type of overshoe. They are usually made of neoprene or a lined laminate and are designed for temperatures around and below freezing.

Why feet get cold first

Three things happen in a cycling shoe: the foot hardly moves, the headwind hits it head-on, and the ventilation openings in the sole let cold air reach the toes directly. In addition, a shoe that is laced too tightly restricts circulation.

The fit over the shoe is important. If the overshoe is too tight, it compresses the shoe and makes the problem worse. One size larger is usually the better choice in winter, also because thicker socks need room underneath.

The most common weak point is the zip at the back: it is put under a lot of strain when you put the overshoe on, and wet and cold are most likely to get in through it.

In winter, loosen the shoe closure by one step. Warm feet come from circulation, not from material alone.
