Only your eyes, nose and mouth stay free; your ears, cheeks and neck are covered. The insulating layer is deliberately thin so that your helmet still fits.
In winter, the neck is often underestimated, even though a lot of heat is lost there. Otherwise, a strip stays exposed between the helmet rim and the jacket collar.
Tip: Put the balaclava on before the helmet and then readjust the helmet. The extra layer changes the fit.
