What a wind gilet is for
A wind gilet protects your chest and stomach from a cold headwind but leaves your arms free. In the mountains, where Karpos comes from, this is particularly useful: on the climb it is warm, and on the descent the wind quickly cools your sweaty upper body. You then put the gilet on at the highest point and take it off again at the bottom. Because it has no sleeves, it usually folds up small and can be stowed in a backpack or jersey pocket.
At most temperatures, a short-sleeve jersey or bike shirt under the gilet is enough. In cooler conditions, add arm warmers or a long-sleeve shirt.
Tip: Choose a gilet that is a little longer at the back. Otherwise it rides up in the bent-over position on the bike and your lower back is exposed to the wind.
