Layers instead of bulk
A winter jacket for cycling is thinner than a winter jacket for everyday use, because your body generates heat when you ride. The outer side keeps out the wind, the inner side keeps in the warmth. The layers underneath do the rest: a long-sleeve base layer and, if necessary, a long-sleeve jersey. If you ride a lot in the mountains, you are better off with a lighter jacket and more layers, because you can open one layer on the climb.
Reflective elements are particularly important in winter, because many rides take place at dusk.
Tip: Close the jacket completely before the descent, even if you were warm on the climb. An open collar quickly makes you cold on the descent.
