When are short sleeve base layers suitable for cycling?

Short sleeve base layers are suitable for spring and autumn, when a sleeveless model is no longer enough, but a long sleeve one would already be too warm. They are the middle level of cycling base layers.

The fabric absorbs sweat and passes it to the outside instead of keeping it on the skin like cotton. Flat seams, or no seams at all, prevent pressure points under a tight-fitting jersey. The short sleeves also cover the armpit area, which remains uncovered with sleeveless models, depending on the jersey cut.
