Time trial overshoes for racing

Time trial overshoes have nothing to do with warmth. They are aerodynamic components: very thin, close-fitting covers that smooth the shoe and its closures.
What a few grams of fabric achieve
Buckles, dial closures and seam edges create turbulence and increase air resistance. A smooth cover reduces air resistance at a point that moves through the wind thousands of times per hour. In time trials and triathlon, this is one of the cheapest measures of all, relative to the effort.
The cut is correspondingly tight. Time trial overshoes fit like a second skin and take some patience to put on. Some models have a cut-out at the heel, others a full-length zip at the back.
In competition, aerodynamic overshoes are permitted by most regulations, but there are rules for socks and their height. It is worth checking the event information before you put together your kit for race day.
Put on the overshoes before you clip in and check that the cleat is free. A piece of fabric between cleat and pedal comes loose at the worst possible moment.
