Base layers for winter

In winter, the layer directly on the skin matters more than the jacket over it. It must draw sweat away before it cools down and hold a layer of air at the same time.

Materials

Merino wool keeps you warm even when damp and hardly smells after several uses. Synthetic fibres transport moisture faster, but lose warmth when wet. Blends try to combine both.

Fit

Base layers should fit tight. If they are loose, there is air between skin and fabric, and moisture transport no longer works.

Long sleeve models with a high collar close the gap at the neck that otherwise remains between jacket and headwear.
