Bars and solid food

Bars supply carbohydrates in solid form and fill you up differently from a gel. On long, steady rides, this is an advantage: the stomach has something to do, and you do not feel hungry.

When they do not work

At a high heart rate. Chewing and swallowing then become difficult, and digestion is limited. For intense sections, gels or drinks are the better choice; bars belong in the calm phases.

Consistency

Soft bars can also be eaten in the cold. Hard ones become rock hard in the jersey pocket in winter and mushy in the sun in summer. If you ride in winter, keep this in mind.
