Rack bags and handlebar bags hold what no longer fits in the jersey pocket or frame bag. They hang on the rack or at the front of the handlebar and put the weight on the bike instead of on your body.

Front or rear: what makes the difference?

Weight on the handlebar noticeably affects steering. A full handlebar bag makes the bike more sluggish and less stable at higher speeds, but you have your map, camera and bars within reach. Luggage at the rear is closer to the centre of gravity and hardly affects handling, but is only accessible when you stop. If you combine both, pack the heavy items at the rear and low down.

For mounting, the use decides: click systems are quick to remove and practical for commuting; roll closures and straps hold better on rough ground. Be prepared for rain, either with a waterproof material or with a rain cover supplied.

Load a new bag fully once and ride a short loop before you take it on tour. Only then can you see whether your heel touches the luggage.
