What makes an MTB shoe
The sole. An MTB shoe has a tread you can walk with, and the cleat is recessed into it. On a road shoe, the cleat protrudes under the sole, which is why every step becomes slippery. Off-road, you push and carry the bike, so the shoe needs grip.
Clipless or flat
A clipless shoe connects the foot firmly to the pedal. This brings efficiency and costs reaction time when things get tight. Flat pedal shoes have a smooth, soft rubber sole that grips the pins of the pedal and lets the foot go at any time.
About the size
Measure your foot length in centimetres and compare it with the manufacturer's chart. Cycling shoes fit tighter than street shoes, but the foot swells on long descents. Choosing too tight a size takes its toll after two hours.
