Winter shoes for XC mountain biking

A waterproof membrane reliably keeps out moisture from puddles and wet leaves, while the insulation in the lining keeps your feet warm even at low temperatures. The small 2-bolt cleats for SPD-compatible pedals are recessed into the sole and work more reliably in mud than the large cleats of road shoes.

The grippier outsole also helps when you briefly push or carry the bike over particularly muddy or steep sections, which are more common in winter cross-country than in summer.

A slightly higher cuff than on summer models also keeps more warmth in the shoe and stops snow or mud from getting in from above.
