In countries that drive on the right, the mirror goes on the left side, because overtaking happens from there. You need the right-hand version if you ride in countries that drive on the left or want to use two mirrors.
A mirror does not replace looking over your shoulder before turning. But it shows what is approaching from behind without turning your head, which helps above all on country roads and with luggage, when looking back is harder.
Tip: Adjust the mirror in your normal riding position, not while standing next to the bike. The image should show the road behind the bike, with your own arm only at the edge.
