Flat pedals at a glance

On flat pedals, the foot stands firmly, but can be taken off at any time.

When they are the better choice

On technical terrain, when learning new riding skills and for everyday use, where you get on with normal shoes. If you are rebuilding confidence after an injury, you also ride more relaxed with them than clipped in.

What provides grip

The pin height and the sole of the shoe. Soft rubber grips much better than a hard trainer sole. Many pedals let you replace or shorten the pins if the grip is too firm or too loose.

Off-road, shin guards are part of the kit, because a slipping foot makes the shin hit the pins.
