When are cycling overshoes worth it for road cyclists?

Cycling overshoes are worth it for road cyclists whenever rain, wind or cold make your thin, well-ventilated road shoes uncomfortably cold – because these shoes are designed for low weight and ventilation rather than weather protection, they offer hardly any insulation against harsh conditions on their own.

Reflective details on the heel also increase visibility at dusk, when autumn or winter rides more often end in poor visibility.

For different temperature ranges, there are both thinner rain overshoes, which mainly protect against wet conditions, and thicker thermal overshoes with extra insulation for sub-zero temperatures. Toe covers, on the other hand, only cover the toe area and are suitable for slightly cool but dry days when a full overshoe would be overkill. Finally, time trial overshoes also have an aerodynamic shape and are used more in competitions than in normal training.

Many road cyclists already reach for overshoes at cool single-digit temperatures because their feet quickly get cold in the headwind.
