How warm does a winter jacket need to be?
A thermal jacket combines a windproof outer side with a warming inner side. How much insulation makes sense depends on what you wear underneath. With a warm long-sleeve base layer, a mid-weight jacket is often enough; without a base layer, you need more insulation. If you sweat in a jacket that is too warm, you get colder on the descent than with a slightly lighter jacket.
Tip: Try on the jacket with the base layer you will wear it with later. If it is then too tight, it keeps you less warm.
