Cycling trousers for city and travel look like normal trousers but still offer what matters on the bike: freedom of movement, stretch and often a removable pad.
The difference to road cycling shorts
Instead of close-fitting Lycra, firmer, matt fabrics are used here. The cut is straight, there are pockets, and nothing looks out of place in the office or café. Many models have inner shorts with a thin pad or can be combined with separate padded shorts.
The details that make the difference on the bike are important: a higher waistband at the back so that nothing is exposed when you lean forward, a narrower right leg or a strap against chain contact, and a material that handles some spray.
Everyday cycling trousers are washed more often than sportswear, because they are also worn in the office.
For distances under five kilometres, a thin pad or no pad at all is usually enough. Inner shorts are only really worth it for longer distances.
