Which cycling socks are suitable for road rides in winter?

For road rides in winter, warm cycling socks with a higher cuff are suitable. As well as thicker, insulating material, a higher cuff closes the gap between long winter tights and shoe, so less cold air reaches the ankle directly. Wind-resistant fibres on the front of the cuff also reduce heat loss from the headwind, while the sole stays moisture-wicking so that sweat on climbs does not turn into cold spots.

As winter road shoes are often already insulated, the sock thickness should match the width of the shoe. If it is too tight in the shoe, blood flow to the foot is reduced and it cools down faster.

On very cold days, overshoes that keep the wind off the whole shoe also help.

Tip: With winter shoes that already fit closely, choose a thinner winter sock rather than a very thick one so as not to restrict blood flow unnecessarily.
