Which cycling socks are suitable for road rides in summer?
For road rides in summer, particularly thin, short cycling socks made of moisture-wicking fibres are suitable. They keep your feet dry despite the heat without adding extra volume in a tight road shoe – unlike thicker, insulating winter socks.
Flat seams in the toe area prevent pressure points, while thin material does not constrict the foot in a tight shoe. Mesh panels on the instep also improve ventilation, which noticeably helps keep your feet cool on rides lasting several hours in high temperatures.
For long summer rides with several hours in the sun, some riders also prefer slightly lighter colours, as dark socks can heat up more in direct sunlight.
As summer socks wear out faster than winter models due to frequent sweating, it is worth buying several pairs if you use them a lot, so that there is always a dry pair ready for the next ride.
Tip: With tight road shoes in summer, go for particularly thin socks, as a sock that is too thick narrows the limited space inside and can impair blood flow to the foot in the heat.
