Shimano offers clipless systems for different uses. SPD-SL is designed for road bikes and uses large 3-bolt cleats for a wide contact area. SPD is designed for mountain bike, gravel and touring. The small 2-bolt cleats are recessed into the shoe sole, so you can walk well.
Tip: When you install them for the first time, set the release tension low. This way you can learn to clip out safely.
