The material passes sweat outwards instead of keeping it on the skin. You notice this not during the effort, but in the moments afterwards: on the descent, at the traffic lights, during a break.
The sleeve length depends on the season: sleeveless for high summer, short or long sleeves for the transitional seasons and winter.
Tip: Wash base layers without fabric softener. Fabric softener forms a film on the fibres and reduces exactly the moisture transport for which the base layer was bought.
