ABUS comes from Wetter an der Ruhr and has made security technology since 1924. Bicycle locks have been at the core of the range for decades.

Technology from ABUS

The ABUS security level scale for bicycle locks runs from 1 to 15. It describes how much resistance a lock offers against an attempt to break it. Higher levels usually mean more material, and with that more weight and a higher price.

The design also matters: folding locks can be carried on the frame, and chain locks are flexible for locking up but are the heaviest version.

A bike that stands in public space at night needs a different level than one that waits briefly in front of the bakery during the day.

Pro tip: Lock the bike so that the lock does not rest on the ground. A lock with ground contact is much easier to break open, because the ground serves as support.
