How often does a bike need care?
That depends less on distance than on weather. After rides in rain or on salted roads, clean the drivetrain and brakes soon. In dry summer, one round every few hundred kilometers is enough. A reliable signal is the sound: a chain you can hear needs attention.
Bike care at a glance
Wet lubes last longest in rain and mud, but they also attract the most dust. Dry lubes stay cleaner, but you must apply them more often. Waxes run cleanest and with little wear. They need a thoroughly degreased chain and regular reapplication.
In which order do you work?
Work from coarse to fine: clean first, then degrease, lubricate last. If you reverse the order, you only spread the dirt around. Frame care and corrosion protection come last. They belong on clean, dry surfaces.
What does not belong on the bike?
Penetrating oils displace water, but they do not lubricate the chain permanently.
Wipe off excess oil after a few minutes. On the chain, only the oil inside the links works. Everything on the outside attracts dirt.
