The gilet keeps the torso warm, leaves the arms free and can be folded up into any jersey pocket.
The most flexible layer for changing conditions
On gravel, the route often goes through forest, over open fields and back into the shade. The perceived temperature changes constantly.
A zip that you can open with one hand is important, so that you can adjust while rolling without stopping. So is a hem with a silicone band that does not ride up on rough surfaces.
If you often start or arrive in the dark, look for reflective details. There is no street lighting on field and forest paths, and the gilet is the outermost layer on the upper body.
Take the gilet even in good weather. It weighs almost nothing, and on a long descent after a sweaty climb it is the most useful item in your pocket.
