Protect your health by avoiding clothing with PFC-based impregnation or membrane. Many manufacturers rely on good alternatives to PFC.

What actually is PFC?

PFC is an abbreviation for "per- and polyfluorinated chemicals." These chemicals are often used in the manufacture of cycling clothing and equipment to make the products water and dirt repellent. However, PFCs can be harmful to health and are virtually non-degradable.

How can PFCs be hazardous to health?

In high doses, PFCs can be harmful to health, especially to the liver, kidneys and reproductive system. It is also reported that PFCs can affect the immune system and possibly lead to hormonal changes. However, there is no definitive evidence yet on how much PFCs can actually affect health and what dose can be considered safe. Nevertheless, it is recommended to minimize contact with PFCs, as they are persistent in the environment, i.e. virtually non-degradable, and can thus possibly be absorbed via food.

Why are PFCs not banned?

PFCs are unfortunately not generally banned in clothing, but some countries have regulations and restrictions on the use of PFCs in certain products, including cycling clothing and equipment. In the European Union, certain PFCs such as PFOS and PFOA were classified as Substances of Very High Concern in Regulation (EU) No. 2019/1021 and subsequently banned in Regulation (EU) No. 757/2020. However, other PFCs continue to be used. It is important to note that legislation regarding PFCs varies in different countries and regions and may also change. However, many manufacturers have started to take voluntary measures and use PFC-free alternatives to reduce the environmental impact of their products.
