Are socks worn in triathlon at all?

In triathlon, many athletes deliberately leave out socks to save time in the transition zone – if you do wear socks, you will usually go for particularly thin models that are quick to put on and have a non-slip inside, so that you can also pull them over damp feet.

A low cuff and no constricting bands also make it easier to pull them on quickly under time pressure.

For long-distance races where the run leg lasts several hours, more athletes choose to wear socks to prevent blisters, while over short distances the time saved by going without socks is often given more weight. If you are prone to blisters, you should not make this decision on race day, but test it in training under realistic conditions with wet feet.

Some athletes also deliberately go without socks only on the bike leg, but quickly pull on a pair before the run segment to better protect their feet for the longer effort.

Tip: Practise quickly pulling socks on over wet feet in training so that you do not lose time in the transition zone with an unexpectedly tricky manoeuvre.
