Which helmets are suitable for triathlon?

For triathlon, aerodynamically shaped time trial helmets with an extended tail that reduce air resistance on the bike leg are particularly suitable – unlike the better-ventilated road helmets, which are designed primarily for cooling rather than maximum aerodynamics.

The elongated, often tapered helmet shape guides the air past your head more smoothly, which can make a noticeable difference, especially in time trial positions with a low, tucked upper body. Because these helmets have fewer vents than classic road helmets, more heat builds up during intense efforts, which you should take into account in hot races.

Some models also offer a magnetically attached, interchangeable visor instead of separate sports glasses, which promises extra aerodynamics but takes some getting used to.

In long-distance races with a bike leg lasting hours in blazing sun, you should not underestimate the heat that builds up in a closed helmet, as overheating your head can impair your performance on the following run leg.
