On the trainer, you sit more still than outdoors. There is no descent, no standing out of the saddle out of habit, no bumps that briefly shift your weight. The pressure stays constantly on the same spot.
Cycling shorts for indoor cycling
This means: the pad is more important than outdoors, and the material can be lighter. Shorts with an evenly padded seat area without hard edges are recommended. Thicker winter tights, in contrast, are out of place, because without headwind every additional fabric layer traps heat.
The second point is sweat. On the trainer, there is much more of it than on the road, and it stays in the material. Quick-drying fabrics and a pad that does not store moisture extend the life of the shorts and help prevent skin problems.
Some riders deliberately use older shorts indoors whose pad is no longer good enough outdoors. This works for a while, but ends where the pad becomes hard; on the trainer, you notice this sooner than on the road.
