What is a thermal vest for?

For the days when a jacket is too much and a jersey is too little. The vest warms the torso but leaves the arms free, and that is exactly what makes it useful in fall. On the climb, no heat builds up, and on the descent, the upper body stays warm.

On most models, the front is windproof, and the back is more open so that sweat can escape. Insulated versions have a thin thermal lining and add some bulk. Unlined ones fold small and fit in the jersey pocket.

On sizing: you wear a thermal vest over the jersey, but not over a jacket. If you take your usual jersey size, you are usually right. One size up flaps and cancels the warming effect.
