Knee-length shorts

Knee-length shorts end just above or below the knee and close the gap between shorts and tights. For temperatures around 12 to 18°C, they are the obvious choice.

The reason lies in the joint itself. The knee has little tissue with good blood flow over it and cools faster than the thigh. If you keep it warm, you prevent the stiff pedal stroke that otherwise appears after an hour.

The leg hem should fit snug without constricting. Wide silicone bands hold better than narrow ones and press less.
