The Dutch team looks back on a tradition of over 30 years, during which it appeared under several different names. Many fans especially remember the name Rabobank, which was the title sponsor between 1996 and 2012 and has since returned as a partner.
From the very beginning, the team was able to celebrate sporting success and consistently ranked among the most successful teams in the world. A small sporting dry spell emerged in the mid-2010s under the name LottoNL-Jumbo, when the team became just one of many WorldTour teams. Overall classifications seemed almost unattainable, and major victories were largely absent. However, this could be changed with a surprise transfer, ushering in a new era for the team.
In 2016, Primoz Roglic, a former ski jumper and almost completely unknown in cycling, was signed and repaid the trust just one year later with a Tour de France stage victory. The team recognized that they had found not only a strong rider in him, but a leader who could bring success back at the major stage races.
The team was restructured and designed to provide the best possible support for Roglic. In 2019, the time had come: Roglic won the Vuelta a España, and Steven Kruijswijk also managed to fight his way onto the podium of the Tour de France. For 2020, the goals were raised even higher and everything was focused on one race. The Tour de France title was to come, and transfers were made that, in the eyes of many, made the squad the strongest in the world.
For a long time, this plan worked and Roglic lined up for the decisive time trial at La Planche des Belles Filles wearing the yellow jersey. But then it happened: Roglic’s young compatriot Tadej Pogacar flew up the mountain and pushed Roglic off the throne in the final kilometers!
It took two more years before Visma could finally be rewarded for all the effort, as Jonas Vingegaard won the Tour de France in 2022 and 2023 ahead of Tadej Pogacar. In 2023, the team also achieved victory in all three Grand Tours, a feat that had never been accomplished before!
Since then, the duel between Visma and UAE has become the highlight of every Tour de France, and the two teams have established the term “super team” in cycling.
