Vuelta a España 2026: Route, Stages, Favorites

The Vuelta a España 2026 kicks off on August 22 in Monaco and wraps up on September 13 in Granada – 21 stages, 3,275 kilometers, and roughly 58,000 meters of elevation gain. It's shaping up to be the hilliest of this year's three Grand Tours. The biggest storyline going in: Tadej Pogačar has confirmed he's racing, chasing the one Grand Tour title still missing from his collection.

That's bad news for the competition. Who still has a shot, where the race will be decided, and which stages you should circle on your calendar — read on below.

The Route: From Monaco to Granada Over 3,275 Kilometers

This 81st edition of the Vuelta starts abroad for only the third time in its history – in Pogačar's adopted home of Monaco. After a rolling 9-kilometer individual time trial that partly runs over the Formula 1 circuit, the race heads through southern France and Andorra toward mainland Spain. From stage 5 onward, the action shifts almost entirely to Andalusia, where the finale also takes place.

The numbers tell the story: two individual time trials, seven mountain stages with summit finishes, four medium-mountain stages, and several flat stages. That means noticeably fewer time trial kilometers than in recent editions – good news for pure climbers and explosive riders, bad news for classic time trialists. Two rest days break up the three weeks, after stage 9 and after stage 15.

One standout detail: the finale in Granada breaks with tradition. Instead of a ceremonial roll-in with a bunch sprint, riders will tackle a short circuit four times on the final stage, climbing to the Alhambra each lap. Officially it's classified as flat – in practice, it's an explosive puncheur stage where seconds could theoretically still be lost in the overall classification.

Teams and Rosters: Who's Riding for Whom

Final start lists won't be confirmed until just before the race, but the shape of the main contenders is already taking form.

UAE Team Emirates-XRG arrives with the strongest hand: Tadej Pogačar as the clear leader, flanked by João Almeida, who's looking to back up his second place at the 2026 Giro after a season disrupted by illness. Joining them: Domen Novak, Ivo Oliveira, Pavel Sivakov, Pablo Torres, Kevin Vermaerke, and Jay Vine – a squad built for both mountain support and time trial strength.

Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe (formerly Bora-hansgrohe) is banking on Primož Roglič, the Vuelta's record four-time winner. The Slovenian turns 37 shortly and was recently hit by a car – his form is one of the biggest question marks heading into this edition.

Decathlon-CMA CGM brings Felix Gall, runner-up at the 2026 Giro, while Movistar is backing home favorite Enric Mas, who's already finished on the podium of his home tour three times. Visma-Lease a Bike arrives with Wout van Aert – looking to make amends after a disappointing Tour de France – and Sepp Kuss, who'll be riding his third Grand Tour of the year after the Giro and the Tour.

Notably absent: Jonas Vingegaard, the Vuelta's defending champion, is skipping the race after his crash at the Tour de France. Remco Evenepoel and Paul Seixas are also opting out rather than double up with the Tour. That noticeably weakens the field compared to a full-strength lineup.

Pogačar's Return: The Last Missing Grand Tour Title

Pogačar has already won the Tour de France five times (2020, 2021, 2024, 2025, 2026) and claimed the Giro d'Italia in 2024, his only appearance there. The Vuelta is the last of the three Grand Tours missing from his collection. If he wins overall, he'd become just the ninth professional cyclist in history to win all three Grand Tours at least once – a feat his rival Jonas Vingegaard achieved most recently, at the Giro in May.

His relationship with the Vuelta is a personal one: in 2019, at age 20, he made his Grand Tour debut there, winning three stages and finishing third – still, to this day, his worst result at a major stage race. Seven years later, he returns as the reigning world champion and five-time Tour winner, on a route that looks tailor-made for him: mountainous, light on time trial kilometers, and with an explosive finale.

How close the race falls to the World Championships road race in Montreal (September 20–27) had long raised doubts about his participation. Just two weeks after his fifth Tour win, his team confirmed he'd be racing – a tight schedule that shows just how high a priority this goal is for Pogačar.

Contenders and Rivals: How the Competition Is Responding

With even a reasonably in-form Pogačar, the 2026 Vuelta is shaping up to be tough to crack – the route plays right into his hands, and Vingegaard, his strongest rival this season, is missing entirely. The competition is reacting to this reality in different ways:

Primož Roglič and Enric Mas are counting on home advantage and racing experience on Spanish roads, but they know the gap in form. Felix Gall and Mattias Skjelmose arrive with momentum from the Giro and the Tour respectively, but would need to hold peak form consistently over three weeks to even challenge Pogačar. For the rest of the field, fighting for stage wins and the podium looks like the more realistic goal – an open battle for the overall win doesn't currently seem to be on the cards.
