Tour de France 2023

Review

At the Tour de France 2023, Jonas Vingegaard from Denmark delivered an impressive performance, securing his second triumph at this prestigious cycling race. The 26-year-old made history as the first Danish cyclist to achieve such a feat and visibly enjoyed the moment of his success. Amidst the cheers of his compatriots at the Arc de Triomphe, he embraced his family and thanked his team for their tremendous support.

With a comfortable lead of 7:29 minutes over his Slovenian rival Tadej Pogacar, Vingegaard confidently clinched the overall victory. The record-breaking lead raised doubts about whether such a performance was possible without doping, with rival teams fueling these uncertainties. However, the race was neck and neck for a long time: Although Vingegaard secured the yellow jersey early on and held onto it, it was only a performance drop by Pogacar in the final two stages that allowed Vingegaard to build the substantial time difference. The Dane relished the rivalry with Pogacar, praising the challenging race, as he already set his sights on the upcoming Tour de France, hoping for another triumph next year.

Team UAE can also celebrate with the second and third places in the general classification and the white jersey. The sprint classification was dominated by Jasper Philpsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck), while Giulio Ciccone from Lidl-Trek claimed the mountain classification.

Favorites

Cycling fans are eagerly anticipating the rematch between Vingegaard and Pogačar. Both riders have already won the Tour de France and engaged in a tough duel in 2022, which Vingegaard emerged victorious from. But the competition doesn't sleep either.

Jonas Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma): As the defending champion and one of the best climbers in the field, the Dane is considered one of the top favorites. With the support of his strong Jumbo-Visma team, he has a good chance of winning the overall title. He is also strong in time trials.

Tadej Pogačar

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates): The Slovenian rider has shown impressive performances this year, winning almost every race he has participated in. Pogačar is an outstanding climber and one of the fastest sprinters among the classification riders. Despite sustaining an injury in a crash before the Tour, he will undoubtedly be a strong competitor.

David Gaudu

David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ): The French rider finished second at Paris-Nice behind Pogačar and showcased his strength in climbing. With the few time trial kilometers in this year's route, this plays to his advantage, and he has the potential to pose a threat to the top favorites.

Richard Carapaz

Richard Carapaz (EF Educ. EasyPost): As the winner of the Giro d'Italia in 2019 and third in the Tour de France 2021, the Ecuadorian rider has already proven he can succeed in the mountains. As the captain of the strong EF Education team, he has a good chance of a podium finish.

Enric Mas

Enric Mas (Movistar): The Spanish rider showcased his skills at last year's Vuelta, keeping up with young talent Remco Evenepoel. This season, he has already achieved several top-ten results and can be a clear podium contender in top form. With the support of his Movistar team, he has good chances.

Jai Hindley

Jai Hindley (Bora-hansgrohe): The Australian rider celebrated his first Grand Tour victory for Team Bora-hansgrohe at last year's Giro d'Italia. In his Tour de France debut, he is among the strongest climbers and could surprise.

Daniel Martínez

Daniel Martínez (Ineos Grenadiers): As an experienced rider in the Ineos Grenadiers team, the Colombian rider has good chances for a top placement. Although the team doesn't have clear top favorites, Martínez is the most experienced classification rider and can benefit from strong team support.

Romain Bardet

Romain Bardet (Team DSM): The French rider has already stood on the Tour de France podium twice and has the potential for a good placement. With his Team DSM and the few time trial kilometers, he could deliver a strong performance.

Jerseys, Special Jerseys, and Unique Team Jerseys

As always, the jerseys are available in the current design: The white jersey is for the winner of the youth classification. The polka dot jersey with red dots on a white background is for the best climber. The green jersey is for the best sprinter. And of course, there is also the yellow jersey for the winner of the overall classification.

Jumbo Visma was able to dominate the jerseys in 2022: The polka dot jersey and the Yellow jersey went to the winner Vingegaard, Wout van Aert convincingly claimed the green jersey as the best sprinter. Only the youth classification did not go to Jumbo Visma, but to Team UAE and Pogačar.

In addition to these jerseys, there is also the classic Tribute jersey to Le Grande Bouclé itself: The design is inspired by the finishing straight on the Champs-Élysées. Viewed from above, it forms the star that adorns the jersey in national colors.

Some participating teams also ride in special designs specifically designed for the Tour, including BORA-hansgrohe and Team Jumbo-Visma. Here you can find the jerseys of all participating teams.

The first stage includes a challenging climb on the Cote de Durtol, providing a good opportunity for attacks. The second stage goes from Clermont-Ferrand to Mauriac and features several categorized climbs, including a final ramp to the finish. The third stage could offer a chance for the sprinters, while the fourth stage with Ardennes Classics-like profiles favors the punchers.
